Retail Workers Reveal The Part Of The Holidays That Makes Them Go Nuts--And We Would Too
By Mark PygasUpdated Nov. 19 2020, 9:57 p.m. ET
If you've ever worked retail, you'll know how stressful it can be at the best of times, let alone during the holiday season. The Monday after Thanksgiving, you have to start dealing with even more angry customers when you don't have a certain item in stock. Not to mention how stressful the mantra "The Customer Is Always Right" can be on a retail employee just trying to survive the holiday shopping season. Long hours, constant berating, and of course the relentless time spent picking up aisles of merchandise customers refused to put in the right place. If you've ever worked retail the day before Thanksgiving, you know exactly what we're talking about.
But perhaps the most painful aspect is listening to the same three Christmas songs on repeat.
They just never end. Basically from Halloween until the first week of January, we're stuck in a perpetual loop of non-stop holiday tunes. It's enough to make you wish Frosty just melted. Whats even worse is a lot of retail stores start Christmas music earlier and earlier each year. Soon we'll be to the point where we'll be listening the Jingle Bells on Labor Day.
Writer and director Edgar Wright, who worked on classics like Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, decided to ask the retail workers that follow him which Christmas song makes them go insane, and it's far too real...
Ha. See, I'd think that was one of the better ones.
— edgarwright (@edgarwright) November 26, 2017The one I hate the most is Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas", but put on anything by Burle Ives and I'm one happy camper
— Justin Comic Nerd (@jpomergranite) November 26, 2017Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” is the greatest Christmas song and it’s not close
— AndyLikesThings 🤔 (@andylikesthings) November 26, 2017They all plunge you into the abyss. I haven't worked retail in a decade and can only just now stand Christmas music again
— Sarah Manvel (@typewritersarah) November 26, 2017Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses, i could listen to all day.
Wonderful Christmas Time by McCartney is the worst, though I'm also sick of hearing War Is Over by Lennon too. And I love the Beatles!
— Shaun McAree (@theelusiveshaun) November 26, 2017Santa Baby makes me want to hit things.
— Stately, plump Buck Mulligan (@CMQueen) November 26, 2017You, sir, are correct
— Mel Taylor (@pikminlover) November 26, 2017Place I was working started playing White Winter Hymnal by the Fleet Foxes which I adore, so that was fantastic. Wonderful Christmastime by McCartney feels like it's been on my entire life whenever it plays, the absolute abyss.
— David Green (@DavidpGreen83) November 26, 2017That's a good one.
— edgarwright (@edgarwright) November 26, 2017Huh. Seems the hate for that one is pretty much a universal constant, innit?
— Ron McKenzie (@ronniemick) November 26, 2017I hate 'em all unless Sinatra or Martin are crooning 'em out.
— Jam (@Jamwa) November 26, 2017When I worked retail the ones that drove me slowly crazy were Little Drummer Boy and Jingle Bell Rock.
— Emily Lind (@eflind) November 26, 2017“Wonderful Christmastime” is my Hulk Rage trigger. Immediately scream and plug my ears when I hear those opening synth notes. 🤬🎄🖕🏻
— J. P. Gagen (@jpegfilms) November 26, 2017you have good taste
— mia ♡ (@malierell) November 27, 2017I do love the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version of "Dreidle, Dreidle, Dreidle."
— Chuck (@ivychat) November 26, 2017Darlene Love's "Baby Please Come Home" and "All Alone On Christmas" are enduring delights
— Music Box Theatre (@musicboxtheatre) November 26, 2017Worked in HMV the year Bublé's Christmas album was released- plugged in store non stop. Hearing him croon "Santa Buddy" will never not be the most cringeworthy thing ever.
— Bronagh McCann (@Bronagh_McCann) November 26, 2017One I don’t mind: Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
Plunges me into the abyss: All I Want For Christmas (Is You) - Anyone ever
— Queen 🐝 (@BrandonSaswag_) November 26, 2017There's a pretty clear consensus.
I haven't got the time to tot up all the votes, but at a glance, Macca doesn't seem to be doing so well with 'Wonderful Christmastime'.
— edgarwright (@edgarwright) November 26, 2017These poor people.
