A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olaka Nwogu has accused stakeholders in the party of forcing the outgone chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Walid Jibrin to resign.
According to the former lawmaker, Jibrin was pushed to resign to keep the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu in office.
Naija News had earlier reported that the BoT chairman announced his resignation at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday in Abuja.
Nwogu while speaking on Arise TV on Friday said Jibrin’s office is not affected by the issue on the ground at the party.
He further stated that Jibrin was forced out to make it look like the South had been allowed to take charge of the position.
There had been outcries over the northerners taking charge of sensitive positions in the party.
The presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, National Chairman of the party, Ayu, the Chairman of the Governor’s forum, Aminu Tambuwal and Jibrin before his resignation are from the North.
The camp of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike had insisted that Ayu must resign and be replaced by a southerner ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Nwogu speaking further on the issue in the party said Jibrin had no option but to tender his resignation after much pressure mounted on him.
The former legislator who expressed sadness over Jibrin’s resignation noted that the pressure was mounted on him (Jibrin) to allow Ayu to remain in office.
