One U.S. Navy sailor died and another was injured after a shooting at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach Friday morning, authorities said.

The gunman, a male sailor identified as Christopher J. Ruffier, 26, was shot and killed by Navy police officer after he shot a female sailor in the parking lot outside Hanger 145 on the naval base, the Navy said in a statement. The woman, who remains unidentified, was taken Virginia Beach General Hospital with multiple non-life threatening gunshot wounds. She is in stable condition, according to the statement.

Ruffier, originally from Ohio, enlisted on Feb. 15, 2018 and served as an Aviation Ordnancemen Airman Apprentice, according to the Navy.

Both sailors were assigned to the VFA-37 squadron, NAS Oceana commanding officer Capt. Chad Vincelette said in a Facebook post on Friday.

Vincelette said the shooting took place at 6:45 a.m. and that the naval base has a no weapons policy, according to Vincelette.

“We do random and periodic inspections for prohibited items,” he said. “How the Sailor was able to get a weapon on base is part of the investigation.”

A spokesperson for NAS Oceana tells TIME the shooting was an isolated incident and “domestic in nature.”
