A Tanzanian Catholic bishop has said the late president John Pombe Magufuli requested him twice to bury him.

Bishop Severine Niwemugizi of Rulenge-Ngara Diocese recalled Magufuli told him on two separate occasions that he would lead the mass for his burial.

Speaking during Magufuli's burial mass at the Mary the Virgin Catholic Church in Chato, the man of God recounted a time when state officials confiscated his passports a few years ago when he castigated the late president's regime.

Niwemugizi said he later received his documents after Magufuli ordered the officials to return them citing he would be the lead bishop in his funeral.

"This is the second time I'm telling you that President Magufuli told me in 2015 that being a bishop, I'm the person who would bury him. In the second time, he instructed the immigration commissioner to return my passport hinting on the same reasons," he said.

The cleric said after their conversations, they agreed whoever will pass on the first will be buried by the other because they did not know what the future had in store for them.

Magufuli was a staunch believer in God even in days leading to his death, he remained hopeful in his maker.

According to his family spokesperson Ngusa Samike, even on his death bed, Magufuli was still the same staunch Christian who believed in God and he led prayers and songs together with his doctors and nurses.
